Tips for learning the 9 times table

  • The 9 times table is the 10 times table take away one lot: 9 × 7 = 70 − 7 = 63.
  • Up to 9 × 10, the digits of the answer add up to 9: 9 × 6 = 54, and 5 + 4 = 9.
  • Up to 9 × 10, the tens digit is one less than the number you multiply by: 9 × 8 = 72.
  • The finger trick: hold up 10 fingers and fold down the 7th for 9 × 7. There are 6 fingers before it and 3 after it: 63.

Between 2 and 4 of the 25 questions start with 9, like 9 × 7. Other questions, like 7 × 9, can use it too. This is one of the tables with the most questions, because children often find it harder.
